Episode #10: Craftsman Mindset
Jiro Ono is the master and perfecter of his craft: sushi. Jiro’s restaurant is one of the few three-Michelin-starred establishments (kind of a big deal) and has a 3-6 month waiting list. In the documentary Jiro Dreams of Sushi, you see a compelling view of a man who is considered the father of modern-day sushi preparation. It is fascinating to see the culture of Jiro’s restaurant (very unassuming in its simple location and architecture) where quality and constant improvement is the pursuit and their core competency.
At Sukiyabashi Jiro (Jiro’s restaurant), everyone is laser-focused on excellence. They all have a “craftsman mindset”. As Jiro puts it, “You have to fall in love with your work. Never complain about your job. You must dedicate your life to mastering your skill. That’s the secret of success.” What strikes us is that a craftsman mindset is a lifelong pursuit that values progress over perfection. It is a long obedience in the same direction. That is our hope at Craftwork. That we get 1% better every day towards a big and worthy vision. So whether it is being a parent, a friend, a nurse, or a freelancer, we hope you get one step better at your craft this week and any fruit from your craft is deeply enjoyable.
