Episode #12: Kaizen
With the New Year upon us, many of our minds begin to turn to our goals and resolutions. This is a good thing generally, but sometimes the gap between the change we want to see in the world (or our ourselves) is overwhelmingly large. For those who might get discouraged by this gap, let us offer a word to you: Kaizen.
“Kaizen” is a Japanese word which means “incremental and continuous improvement”. Kaizen is a philosophy that says the best type of improvement involves a long obedience in the same direction, making sustainable changes over time. It means just 1% better each day. Kaizen also happens to be a core value of Craftwork.
Dr. Anna Powers is an entrepreneur, advisor an award-winning scientist. Her belief in Kaizen is rooted in a simple principle in mathematics called exponents, which says that if you do an event continuously you multiply its effect and its the growth becomes exponential. The law says, that if we improve just 1% every day continuously for all 365 days a year, we improve 3780% for the whole year. The key is that in order for it to have a big effect it must be done continuously. So, if you have a big goal, don’t expect to reach it overnight. Set the biggest and best vision possible. Create a huge gap between your current reality and your desired future. And then, apply Kaizen. Get just 1% better every day with a long obedience and consistency in the same direction. In doing so, we may just realize the journey is so much more meaningful than the destination.
