Episode #21: Creating Positive Work Cultures
The “what” is easy. Craftwork is a specialty coffee shop and vibrant membership-based workspace with locations in Fort Worth and Austin. We serve craft coffee and are a connected coworking space. But you knew that already. Our “why” is our heart – we desire to create spaces and places where our members and customers experience connection and community.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average American works 44 hours per week, or 8.8 hours per day. That equates to over 90,000 hours of work over the average person’s life! As staggering as that number is, it does not account for how work hours encompass more and more of our lives. In an increasingly mobile and on demand world, we can all attest to how our work spills into every area of our lives.
Our work influences whether we are thriving or not. So, our hope is simple: we want to see more people (i.e., you) thrive in their work.
Over the next few weeks, The Advocate will focus on thriving in our work. We hope the following encourages, gifts, and connects you towards doing your part in creating a positive work culture around you.
This HBR article details research showing that the organizations who develop positive, virtuous cultures achieve significantly higher levels of effectiveness. How are positive workplace cultures created and how can we contribute? No matter what our position is within an organization, the following moves the needle: offering empathy when teammates are struggling, taking personal responsibility, avoiding blame and forgiving mistakes, and reminding those we work with of the meaningfulness of the work. For you leaders, here is your charge: sacrifice yourself for your team. Research from NYU shows that when leaders are not just fair but self-sacrificing, their employees are actually moved to become more loyal, engaged, and inspired themselves.
