Episode #63: Making Our Goals A Reality
The “what” is easy. Craftwork is a specialty coffee shop and vibrant membership-based workspace with locations in Fort Worth (Foundry, Camp Bowie, Magnolia) and Austin (Domain). We serve craft coffee and are a connected coworking space. But you knew that already. Our “why” is our heart – we desire to create spaces and places where our members and customers experience connection and community.
Yogi Berra famously said, “You’ve got to be very careful if you don’t know where you are going, because you might not get there.” In other words, we can’t hit targets that we never set! If we want good things in our lives, it is best to set goals to get there.
When we are trying to do great things in teams, setting clear, aligned, and prioritized goals becomes increasingly complex…and increasingly important.
The OKR (Objectives and Key Results) Framework created by the Silicon Valley legend, Andy Grove, and popularized more recently by John Doerr, is a framework we have found very helpful. Doerr is responsible for Google, the Gates Foundation, and Bono’s ONE Campaign adopting OKRs. By adopting this framework, each organization has achieved great goals. Goals that were critical to each organization’s mission. As Doerr says, “Ideas are easy. Execution is everything.”
For the sake of the mission each of you are working on, we hope this week’s Advocate helps us become better at “executing” or making important ideas a reality in our lives and in our work.
Objectives define where we want to go. They are short, concrete, significant, and inspiring. Key Results define how we’ll get the objectives done. They are the deliverables that we define for each objective. So why use OKRs? Defining them disciplines our thinking and focuses our efforts on what is most important. Culturally, they keep organizations in step with each other and aligned towards the most important goals to the mission. Want a good overview? Watch John Doerr’s TED Talk here.
When you bring a friend who has never been to a Craftwork, we will give them a free drink of their choice (from our basics menu). (Honor code on bringing a friend new to Craftwork. Limit of 1 free drink per customer. Offer expires 8/26/19.)
