Episode #66: Negotiate Better
The “what” is easy. Craftwork is a specialty coffee shop and vibrant membership-based workspace with locations in Fort Worth (Foundry, Camp Bowie, Magnolia) and Austin (Domain). We serve craft coffee and are a connected coworking space. But you knew that already. Our “why” is our heart – we desire to create spaces and places where our members and customers experience connection and community.
The FBI uses a model for its negotiations called the Behavioral Change Stairway. It is a rubric which helps service members in some of the most intense and high stakes negotiations. The model highlights steps of listening, empathizing, and building rapport to help create trust and a solution in a negotiation.
At its best, negotiation is solving problems with people we disagree with. Thus, whether we realize it or not, each of us negotiate every day. We hope this week’s Advocate prompts us to listen, empathize, and build rapport with those we need to solve problems with.
The FBI’s model (seen here) details 5 steps: Active Listening, Demonstrate Empathy, Establish Rapport, Exert Influence, and Create Behavioral Change. Active Listening is listening to the other’s side and making them aware we are listening. Demonstrating Empathy is when we get an understanding of where the other person is coming from and how they feel. Establishing Rapport is when the other side starts to trust us. Influence is when we have earned the right to work on problem solving with them and recommend a course of action. We believe “negotiation” does not have to be a bad word. At its best, “negotiating better” can mean we are listening, understanding, and empathizing with others in order to create better solutions. Negotiate well this week.
When you bring a friend who has never been to a Craftwork, we will give them a free drink of their choice (from our basics menu). (Honor code on bringing a friend new to Craftwork. Limit of 1 free drink per customer. Offer expires 9/16/19.)
