Episode #8: Developing a Growth Mindset
Carol Dweck is a professor at Stanford and a pioneering researcher in the field of motivation. Carol wanted to see how children coped with challenge and difficulty, so she gave 10-year-olds problems that were slightly too hard for all of them. Some students reacted with what Carol calls a “fixed mindset”. They felt like their core intelligence had been tested. They were devastated.
However, a few of the students reacted in a shockingly positive way. They said things like, “I love a challenge,” or, “You know, I was hoping this would be informative.” They understood that their abilities could be developed. Carol called these students her role models. They had what she calls a “growth mindset.”
A “growth mindset” is the idea that we can grow our brain’s capacity to learn and to solve problems. In this talk, Carol describes two ways to think about problems that are currently too hard for us to solve. Are we not smart enough to solve the problems… or have we just not solved them yet? We hope this talk encourages us all that we can develop abilities to solve the problems that currently seem too difficult for us. We can all learn to develop a Growth Mindset.
