Episode #91: SLIDING DOOR MOMENTS
The “what” is easy. Craftwork is a specialty coffee shop and vibrant membership-based workspace with locations in Fort Worth (Foundry, Camp Bowie, Magnolia) and Austin (Domain). We serve craft coffee and are a connected coworking space. But you knew that already. Our “why” is our heart – we desire to create spaces and places where our members and customers experience connection and community.
How do we build trust? Is it in the grandiose expressions and events? Is it after the game is won or major accomplishment complete? Relationship expert John Gottman, would argue that trust is built in the smallest of moments. Gottman calls these moments “sliding door moments.”
Sliding Door Moments: Gottman tells the story of a time when sliding door moments rang true in his life. One night before bed, Gottman got up to brush his teeth with the intent to return quickly to finish a book when he walked past his wife brushing her hair in the bathroom. John noticed she looked sad. His first thought was to keep on walking. We have all felt this before. Avoid eye contact. Screen the call. Anything to avoid inconvenience. But Gottman remembered that in moments like these choosing not to connect would be a betrayal. So, he started brushing her hair and asked “what’s going on with you right now, babe?” It was a sliding door moment where deep trust was fostered. May each of us build trust in our relationships through choosing to connect in these small but incredibly significant moments.
