Episode #99: Which mountain are you on?
The “what” is easy. Craftwork is a specialty coffee shop and vibrant membership-based workspace with locations in Fort Worth (Foundry, Camp Bowie, Magnolia) and Austin (Domain). We serve craft coffee and are a connected coworking space. But you knew that already. Our “why” is our heart – we desire to create spaces and places where our members and customers experience connection and community.
We love self-improvement. In fact, one of our core values is Kaizen (Japanese for continuous improvement), but we also know that focusing on self-improvement alone does not create a truly meaningful life.
In his book, The Second Mountain, David Brooks analogizes two mountains we all climb. On the first mountain, we focus on attaining personal goals. Summiting the first mountain boosts our ego and often creates happiness; however, it can also lead us to feel adrift when our summit goals have been prioritized over relationships. Brooks argues we need to scale a second mountain: a summit that requires sacrifice for others instead of ourselves.
The Second Mountain: Climbing the summit of the second mountain requires us to focus on the needs of others. This path seems counterintuitive to personal happiness. However, Brooks advocates that the climb of the second mountain will fill our lives with the most wonder, hope, and joy. We hope the concept of the second mountain encourages each of us to live a life worth emulating.
